Day Five - Michigan & Ohio

July 22, 2013

Well we headed out to our destination in Michigan.
We were just down the road at a small truck stop that we had spent the night at.

Welcome to Mueller Fabrication Co.

We had to remove the tarps and then the straps.

This is our truck before we unloaded.
(Notice how low the flat bed is to the tires,
I have another picture of it unloaded and you can see the difference)

It's hard to believe this stuff weighs about 40,000 pounds

Uh Oh, Paul is doing my job of rolling up the straps.  Well, I AM the one taking pictures. :o)

Here we are in front of the door that the truck has to be backed in to.

Well we are inside and a mobile crane is starting to unload the pipes.

The men working here were very nice. Apparently they work 7 days a week.

Here is some of our load in it's new home.

Look at the flat bed now.  It isn't nearly as close to the tires as it was before.

We are heading to a Wal-Mart in Port Huron, MI to wait for our next assignment
and get some prescriptions filled for Paul.

Here is a neat old factory on the way to Wal-mart

We can see Canada off in the distance.  Now this is really cool!

The buildings you see across the water are in Canada.

The town of Port Huron is a beautiful place with many old homes.

I couldn't resist taking a picture of this dinky little old gas station.

Check this out! A Gold Rat ... Makes you want to rush right in, doesn't it?

I just love these old buildings.

Canada!

Port Huron, MI

Well, we are headed to our next destination to pick up our load.  Don't we look so happy.

Couldn't resist this picture - It's Kristi's Korner
My very own boutique all the way up here almost to Canada.

This sign was for the motorists coming from Canada to Michigan.

Guess what?  We are heading back through Detroit again.
Still can't get over the amount of buildings that are deserted.  This is an
entire high rise building.  So sad.

There are still the churches, but some of them are deserted too.

Here is the other side of the building that I couldn't get over
the graffiti going down the side of it yesterday.  Takes a lot planning to do this.
Wish it could be put to better use.

Awesome architecture!

This is a road that leads right under the bridge to Canada.

Another Water Tower, with a little zippity doo dah to it.

Yep, it started to rain.  Boooo! We passed this deserted old bridge.
I bet it was something back in the day.

And yet again... another water tower.

We are here!  Our pick up site in Ohio.
Worthington Steel

We had to put on pants, long sleeve shirts, hard hats, and safety glasses.
Oh and the ever popular reflective vest.  A must have accessory for all truck drivers.

I put duct tape on the back of mine to cover up another company's name.
I got out my handy-dandy sharpies (you know a teacher doesn't go anywhere
without them) and wrote Melton Trucking with 2 hearts on the back.

My long sleeve "make-shift" shirt is a pair of Paul's socks with the toes cut out.
Our arms had to be covered.  It worked pretty good, I might add.
It was Paul's idea... I can't take credit for that one.

These are some of the steel coils that were in the warehouse, ours were smaller but still weighed 40,000 pounds.  I snapped this picture, and then we asked if we could take some more and they said "No, not in the warehouse"

Here is a lovely view of my "sock arm" and my awesome work gloves.  Dirt still gets through them, but I know that my hands are in much better shape for having worn them.

This is the warehouse where we picked up the steel rolls from.  Melton was in full force.
We met a nice guy named Harry from Melton and he gave me some pointers
on my strapping methods.  He was a trainer and very friendly.  Thanks, Harry!

On the way out, this old train was sitting next to the warehouse.

Well, this will be our resting point for the night.  The Ohio Turnpike has rest stops all along it.
Truckers get free showers and laundry facilities.  We sat and watched Mary Tyler Moore and Dick Van Dyke while we waited for everything to dry.  We met a couple from Michigan, who originally came from Tennessee.  It was nice to talk to some other people.

 Psalm 121:8
The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in
from this time forth and forevermore.
